Your Harry Potter Horoscope — Because Witches Wanna Know

Let me ask you: Did you bake a cake for Harry Potter's 11th birthday? Collect wands, Mad Eye Moody marbles, or wizard robe Snuggies? Paint your face in honor of your favorite Quidditch team? Make your own Butterbeer?

If you answered yes to any of the above — or to all of the above, like me — congratulations, you're a true Harry Potter nerd. Which means you're likely losing it over Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on November 18, not to mention all the amazing HP makeup items flooding the internet in anticipation of its release. (See here and here.)

So, to really kick our obsession into high gear, we consulted Georgetown professor Carol Dover, who taught the course "Magical Marvels: Knights of Old & Harry Potter." She helped us find our house, our standout traits, and the makeup best suited for each. Think of it as beauty horoscopes — for Hogwarts witches.

Gryffindor

Anyone with a fifth-grade reading level knows that red is one of Gryffindor's emblematic colors. Red, according to Dover, makes sense for Gryffindor, a house whose members are described by the Sorting Hat as "brave at heart" and full of "daring, nerve, and chivalry."

But did you know that Rubeus Hagrid (Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts and former Gryffindor) was named for it? "Rubeous" means red in Latin, Professor Dover points out.

This crimson lipstick from Revlon is a classic way to rock the shade. Plus, it looks good on a multitude of skin tones.

Revlon Love Is On Super Lustrous Lipstick, $7.99, available at Revlon.

"Gryffindor's mascot is a golden-colored lion, which is also one of the animal symbols of Scotland," says Professor Dover. Lions are known for their bravery and power in the animal kingdom, which is why they're repping the most badass house. (Can you tell I'm a little biased?)

This bronze eyeshadow quad from Chantecaille features four shimmery hues with a pretty lion-head design. But even better: A portion of the proceeds is donated to Lion Guardians, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the species in Kenya and Tanzania.

Chantecaille Protect The Lions Eye Palette, $85, available at Barneys New York.

The golden hair of the lion's coat is Gryffindor's second house color, which happens to also be a very trendy shade for 2016. Swipe this shimmery gold highlighter from Laura Geller onto lids or cheeks for a gilded effect.

Laura Geller Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Gilded Honey, $26, available at Ulta Beauty.

Ravenclaw

"In wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind, where those of wit and learning, will always find their kind," sings the Sorting Hat in the first book of the Harry Potter series. In other words, Ravenclaws are smart — like, really, really smart.

That's why we think Ravenclaws will appreciate these towelettes straight out of a science fair. These compact facial wipes are pretty much the Engorgement Charm IRL. Simply pop one of them out of the package, add water, and watch them expand. (It helps to imagine you're doing this in front of a cauldron in Advanced Potion-Making.)

Blackout Mask Wipe Off Towel, $5, available at Urban Outfitters.

This bronze liquid — which happens to be one of Ravenclaw's house colors — is perfect for concocting your very own illuminating potion. Add a few drops into your foundation or moisturizer for an all-over glow.

Cover Fx Custom Enhancer Drops, $42, available at Sephora.

Want to make a bold makeup statement while still repping your house? This matte blue liquid lipstick (blue is also one of Ravenclaw's house colors) is a great option. It lasts for hours on lips, meaning it will stay put through hours of classes, even if you jump through time using an illegal time turner.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Matte Long Wear Lipstick in Who's Zoomin Who, $21, available at Too Faced.

Hufflepuff

J.K. Rowling didn't just pick each house's mascot out of thin air — each emblematic animal has meaning and significance. In the case of Hufflepuff, the badger is the house's animal. "Badgers are known for being group workers," says Professor Dover. "They work as a group together and help each other to get things done. [Hufflepuffs] aren't self-serving people."

When it comes to beauty, we imagine a Hufflepuff would never let a sister struggle to apply nail polish with her non-dominant hand. After all, aren't manicures more fun in groups than solo? Especially when you're sporting Hufflepuff's canary-yellow house color.

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in Yellow, $7.49, available at Target.

This shadow from NYX Cosmetics may look daunting in the pan, but tapped into the inner corners of your eyes, it provides just the right amount of punch. (In that same Hufflepuff canary spirit color, we might add.)

NYX Cosmetics Hot Singles Eyeshadow in STFU, $4.49, available at Ulta Beauty.

Hufflepuffs are known for being loyal — just like the beauty products we know will never let us down. Take black liquid eyeliner, for example. This Kat Von D is a staple in our makeup bags, and the black shade (another Huffle house color) makes a great accent to your yellow eye look.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, $19, available at Sephora.

Slytherin

Snakes come up in the Harry Potter series quite often. Not only are they Slytherin's house animal, but Harry and Voldemort speak Parseltongue, the language of serpents. It's with this unique skill that a young Voldemort (then Tom Riddle) domesticated (if you can even call it that) Salazar Slytherin's basilisk.

So if you're on the darker side, why not deck out your makeup collection with some snake-themed products? This shadow is embossed with teeny-tiny scales.

Another interesting tidbit: Famous Slytherin house member Draco Malfoy's first name means "dragon"—another scaly creature—in Latin.

Catrice Liquid Metal Eyeshadow In Look Me In The Ice, $4.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

According to the good ol' Sorting Hat, Slytherins are "cunning folks [who] use any means to achieve their ends." We think a contouring palette is perfect for sly Slytherins because it gives them a chance to show off their skill and subtly change the structure of their face — a crafty illusion, if you will.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit, $40, available at Sephora.

Bold-lip lovers will adore this deep, hunter-green lipstick. Pair it with your Slytherin robes and you're set to conquer the House Cup.

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick In Kale, $26, available at Sephora.
