These Are The Must-Download Apps Of 2016

$

0

I'm usually a proponent of the fewer apps on your homescreen, the better. Otherwise, you're dealing with a cluttered screen or tons of folders trying to organize everything — and far too many notifications to deal with.

This is all to say that I'm pretty picky about which apps make the cut. If it isn't something that I'm going to use all the time — the Facebooks and Snapchats of the world — or that I really love using (Prisma!), it will be quickly deleted. It's my Marie Kondo approach to homescreen cleanup.

Not sure which apps are worthy of prime real estate on your iPhone? The 20 that follow are well worth your consideration. Included are the iTunes Store's most popular apps of 2016 and the ones that Apple's seasoned app store editors crowned the best of the year. Fingers crossed that by the time the holidays are over, you'll have a brand-new jet-black iPhone 7 to download them to.

The Best Apps Of The Year

The 10 apps that follow weren't the most downloaded of the year, but they were chosen by Apple editors for excelling within their respective categories. From guided meditations to newsworthy picks, here are the lesser known apps that you need to download, stat.

Quartz's mobile app is one of the most approachable ways to get your daily news. The app presents trending headlines in a texting format. If an article doesn't interest you, you can move on to the next. Want to hear more? Tap the thinking-face emoji and the app texts you interesting quotes to fill you in.

Is MSQRD the next Snapchat? Maybe. Facebook bought this live-filter and face-swapping app earlier this year, fueling rumors that it might make a play at its popular competitor. The app hasn't achieved Snapchat-level fame yet, but it does have an impressive array of movie, emoji, and animal-themed filters that you can virtually try on and share via text and social media.

The creators of Prisma had the genius idea to turn your photos into works of art. The app transforms mediocre street scenes and poorly lit selfies into creations resembling the cubist masterpieces of Piet Mondrian and Edgar Degas.

You don't have to be a teacher or student to enjoy this app from the creators of Duolingo. Flip through cards to build your knowledge of everything from French to Renaissance Art. It's the time-passing tool your commute needs.

Tinycards, free, available on the iTunes Store.

Hyper brings the swiping apparatus of Tinder and Bumble to videos. Every hour, the app's filmmakers add a new video to your "cards," which you can then swipe right to add to your library for later or dismiss altogether. You'll see a wide variety of topics, from space news to Jimmy Kimmel's skits.

Shopping for your favorite hipster frames is easier via the Glasses By Warby Parker app. Still undecided? Choose ones you'd try on at home without making the purchase. Our personal favorites are Louise and Laurel.

Planning to put in a bid for a new apartment? Know the details about your credit score ahead of time with Credit Karma. The free app securely pulls your information to let you know where you stand, allow you to dispute any errors, and learn more about what goes in to your score.

Skip overly general and cliché city tours and try one that's more creative. Detour has audio tours in 10 major cities that will take you off the beaten path. Whether you want to explore the secrets of the Brooklyn Bridge or the backstreets of Westminster, the app has you covered.

There are plenty of guided meditation apps out there, but few, if any, are as specific as Meditation Studio. You can have an expert lead you through a four-minute-long evening relaxation session just before bed or a breathing-visualization exercise just before you negotiate a pay raise.

Meditation Studio, $3.99, available on the iTunes Store and Google Play.

For a personally curated fashion newsfeed, download the Vogue app. The app learns your reading preferences and presents you with eight specially selected articles every day. J Lawr fans will be in good company.

Most Popular Free iPhone Apps

Many of the most downloaded apps of the year won't come as a surprise, but before 2016, who would have thought Pokémon Go would end up in the top 10? Here's a look at what we were all downloading and why.

Photo: App Store.

10. Spotify

Spotify still rules when it comes to playlists. The app's best addition of the year: A Playlist Takeover series, featuring the music favored by celebs, models, and more.

9. Netflix

After its recent announcement of in-app downloads for offline viewing, we're betting that Netflix rises to first or second place in 2017. If we ask nicely, can we please get season 2 of Stranger Things sooner?

8. Pandora

This past September, Pandora proved itself a worthy Spotify competitor with Pandora Plus, a way to skip, replay, and listen to songs offline for just $4.99 per month. Next year, it's primed to become even bigger with Pandora Premium, which will create smart playlists based on your listening preferences.

7. Google Maps

Google Maps is already the go-to for when you're in "I just got off the subway and don't know which direction to go" mode, but it's become even more essential as a tour guide. In addition to the existing "explore around you" tool, you can now add stops for a more complete road-trip agenda. Also worth checking out: This year's brand-new Google Trips app.

6. YouTube

YouTube proved a valuable asset throughout the election with many news organizations livestreaming in-app. The app also upped its quality this year: You'll now be able to watch HDR videos and 4K livestreams.

Photo: YouTube.

5. Facebook

Fake news aside, Facebook's most newsworthy feature of the year has been the addition of livestreaming. From Chewbacca Mom's viral fame to Live's role in the shooting of Philando Castile, we're just seeing the impact of the streaming tool.

Photo: Facebook.

4. Instagram

Oh, Instagram, where do we even begin? The app pulled out all the stops this year, launching its Snapchat-lookalike Instagram Stories and making major moves to fight online harassment. And let's not forget the critical support tools Instagram rolled out in October.

3. Pokémon Go

There's no denying that Pokémon Go ruled screens and topics of conversation this year. And while the game's viral success has faded since the summer, the app is still going strong. There are even rumors that it will team up with Starbucks for its next big update.

Photo: Pokémon Go.

2. Messenger

There isn't much you can't do on Facebook's Messenger app. From making payments and requesting rides to playing games, the app is quickly rising in status.

Photo: Messenger.

1. Snapchat

Snapchat proved that its in it for the long game this year — at least, longer than a disappearing-after-10-seconds snap. Thanks to Memories, it's now way easier to keep a record of your stories. Among Snapchat's other fun additions: The ability to pin emoji to your video snaps and a way to search for celebrity accounts. As for 2017, expect to hear more about Spectacles and other products Snap Inc. has up its sleeve.

The Funniest Beauty-Product Reviews On The Internet

$

As far as funny product reviews are concerned, Amazon is king. Who hasn't fallen into an internet spiral reading commentary about a banana slicer? But household products aren't the only victims of hilarious comment-trolling.

Yep, even beauty products are subject to jokes — and that happens in both the positive reviews and the negative ones. From people noting that their makeup stayed on through a night of binge-watching to those complaining about the pain of hair removal, we couldn't help but laugh (or cringe) at these first-hand accounts.

We've rounded up some of the funniest, most honest beauty-product reviews from Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and Amazon. Even if you haven't used these products, you'll definitely smile at other people's testimonies. Check 'em out, ahead.

Kayla Isaacs contributed reporting to this story.

"Being a loose cannon who does not play by the rules, the first thing I did was ignore the warning and smear this all over my [testicles]... In their place is a maroon-colored bag of agony which sends stabs of pain up my body every time it grazes against my thigh or an article of clothing. I am suffering so that you don't have to. Heed my lesson.

"(I am giving this product a 5 because — despite the fact that I think my [testicles] might fall off — they are now completely hairless.)" — Randy Amarus

Veet Hair Removal Gel-Crème, 200mL, $14.01, available at Amazon.

"I've been using this primer for over 10 years... I remember when I used to go clubbing and be [too] drunk to remove my makeup...the next morning my eye makeup would still be there." — jaiimee

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $20 for 0.33 oz, available at Sephora.

"I needed a vessel to safely transport viable dinosaur embryos from a secret compound on an island in South America. I couldn't have asked for a better container. It even dispenses shaving cream! I tested this out in my hand at a restaurant and put it on someone's pie. I highly recommend this product!!!!" — A. Decker

Southwest Specialty Products 30007C Barbasol Can Safe, $14.03, available at Amazon.

"I got this today in the mail and immediately went to brush my teeth. I decided to do my tongue first and went to town... I was happy the bristles were strong and definitely felt like my tongue was getting a proper scrubbing! I felt a lot of saliva building up, so I spit in the sink. BLOOD AND SALIVA.

"Freaked out, I looked in the mirror and my tongue looked like a slab of meat fresh from the butcher's lair. I scrubbed everywhere a little too vigorously and as a result got bleeding spots all over my tongue...

"After my tongue stopped looking like a victim of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I was pleasantly surprised... The Tung Brush sent the plaque on my tongue an immediate eviction notice and I definitely do appreciate that." — Truth

Tung The Original Tung Brush Tongue Cleaner, $5.07, available at Amazon.

"My mime class went ape-crazy over this stuff. Comments ranged from "_________!" to "__________!!!" You've never seen people so excited." — M. Taylor

AMSCAN Face Paint, 1 oz, White, currently unavailable, Amazon.

"Happened to be wearing this mascara when I went into labor with my second child — natural childbirth — not even a smudge and it wasn't even waterproof!! The rest of my makeup may have been smeared across the delivery-room pillow, but this mascara was still perfect — 'nuff said!" — mamaliki

Lancôme Définicils High Definition Mascara, $27.50, available at Sephora.

"This is a blowdryer. It effectively dried my hair. It didn't start a fire..." — Citymommy123

Remington D3190A Damage Control Ceramic Hair Dryer in Purple, $19.99, available at Amazon.

"Would I choose sex over this product... Do I have to choose? Don't make me choose..." — eshade

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, $23, available at Sephora.

"My skin felt better and looked better after using consistently for 10 days. However, some ingredient in this gave me strange and vivid dreams. The dreams stopped as soon as I discontinued using this product. Absolutely befuddling.

"When using this, I have very intense, vivid dreams and I wake up remembering the entire thing. Luckily, for the most part, they were good and not nightmares, but still, not worth the risk. Can't recommend.

"I had the most amazingly vivid dream that actually affected my mood all day long. I even told a few people about it (it was that good). Then, I had similar experiences the following two nights... This morning, I woke up feeling very shaken. I had another dream, but this one was very upsetting. Wow, I don't know what to say. It makes me feel crazy to write this. But it is 100% true.

"It seems too mundane to be a conspiracy. It’s hard to believe multiple commenters would conspire simply to promote a lie about a random moisturizer. Plus, the various dream-related reviews aren’t even all negative. Though some users say they stopped using the product because of how it affected their slumber, others say they aren’t bothered by the phenomenon, and that it’s worth it for the product’s topical effects.

"It has done wonders for my skin. Each day I wake up, it gives me a healthy, radiant look. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity." — shiloh2

Dr. Brandt Do Not Age Dream Night Cream, 1.7 fl. oz., $94.99, available at Sephora.

"I see this scent working on nerdster/techster types that shop at Supreme, worship Shepard Fairey, and have a serious fetish for Japanese street culture. It's a futuristic, slightly sterile/clinical scent that you could see being pumped into the Apple Store...

"Overall impression: luxe generic. The fragrance equivalent of a Dan Flavin light installation, or Martin Margiela sneakers." — nycgirl

Pharrell Williams GIRL, $65.99, available at Amazon.

"I wore this as eyeliner through a marathon of Supernatural with my boyfriend and, even though I cried three times, it did not budge! I used shade [number] 20 and I still had my sharp cat-eye at the end of the day!" — animetrash

Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in 20 Intense Blue, $23, available at Sephora.

"I swatched it in store before I bought it and it's like an angel kissed my face with highlighted magic." — princessRS

Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Highlighter, $26, available at Sephora.

"Imagine yourself on the front doorstep, lifting your hand to ring the bell. Your grandmother greets you and beckons you to come inside. She has a kind and gentle smile as she asks you if you'd like to join her for a cup of tea. You say yes, feeling comforted by the expected aroma of her home. She has lived in her home for the past 60 years, with the same beautiful set of Queen Anne chairs nestled before her fireplace.

"As usual, she has a fire going, even though it is near 80 degrees outside. She doesn't like to open windows, and long ago stopped dusting her home. 'It's too much trouble,' she says. Her hair she washes once a week, her body odor melding into the dusty sense of the place, but you love her anyway..." — queezie

Prada Infusion d'Iris, $95, available at Sephora Canada.

"I thank famous YouTubers for teaching me how to use this." — Jill

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil, $21, available at Ulta Beauty.

"My daughter's getting married in August — I won't be able to hide these hideous hooves in sneakers for that event... God forbid I decide to have a few alcoholic beverages and kick off the shoes in a drunken race to the dance floor...

"I was ecstatic when the box arrived — I couldn't wait to try this stuff out. I soaked my feet in hot water for half an hour before I used the product. Then I followed the directions on the box to the T, praying for a miracle cure.

"Then...I waited...and waited...and waited... On the seventh day, my miracle arrived. The peeling started and continued for at least a week. It was disgusting, to say the least. I had to wear socks to bed to keep the flaking mess out of the sheets — GROSS! My toes peeled, my arch peeled, my heels peeled... With every shower, the skin would slough off in sheets. I started to get concerned, thinking this was never going to end!

"I am now thrilled to announce that the lowland-gorilla feet are now GONE! It works! Now, on to the collagen supplements. Will they turn back the clock in time for darling daughter to prance down the aisle? We'll see..."

Baby Foot Scented Foot Care, Lavender, 2-Count, $34.49, available at Amazon.

30+ Bomber Jackets You'll Want To Scoop Up Now

Update: This post was originally published on November 4, 2016.

No outerwear trend has caught on quite as rapidly as bomber jackets have over the past year. And we have our theories as to why that is. First, practicality. They're ideal for in between seasons and vary in weight and fabrication, meaning you'll be able to find one that's light enough for summer and also one that's warm enough for winter. Essentially, they're a year-round staple. Second, the Gigi factor. This trend quickly became a celebrity and supermodel favorite, and, truthfully, that's all it really took to go viral. And finally, personalization. There are enough options out there to truly find one that's all your own (and, as a bonus, they go hand-in-hand with 2016's pins-and-patches obsession).

Now that we've given you three solid reasons why bomber jackets are still the real style MVPs, click on to shop a whole bunch of picks that we bet will make their way into your closet pretty damn soon.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie As A Thriller IS Actually What Dreams Are Made Of

$

If you're still not entirely over how badly Paolo tried to sabotage Isabella in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, you're going to absolutely love this fan-made trailer. The fan finally gives Paolo the villainous justice he deserves, turning the beloved Disney movie into a terrifying thriller...and it's genius.

YouTuber Elle of the Mills specializes in pop culture mashups, and her take on everybody's favorite teenager-turned-singing-sensation (sorry, Hannah Montana!) is nothing short of brilliant. If you recall, in the film, Lizzie and her crew travel on a school trip to Rome to find romance, adventure, and gelato, and Lizzie ends up being mistaken for an international pop sensation named Isabella by her creepy, slimy partner, Paolo. (Isn't that how all school trips to Europe go?)

Poor, sweet Lizzie (also played by Hilary Duff in a totally convincing brunette wig) ends up roped into a devious lip synching scheme designed by Paolo to embarrass the real Isabella. Yes, on the surface it seemed like this movie was a lighthearted, family-friendly affair, but there was so much more to Paolo than his '70s coif and collared shirts.

The trailer puts Lizzie in the center of an edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting plot, proving that Lizzie McGuire as a thriller is actually what dreams are made of.

Will Gordo save the day? Is Paolo so yesterday? Check out the trailer to find out.

This London Restaurant Is Offering Free Christmas Dinner To The Homeless & Elderly

$

A key part of Christmas for many people is sitting down for a big meal with their family or friends. Unfortunately, not everyone has people in their lives to gather together with — or access to a complete meal. That's why a London-based Turkish restaurant called Shish is offering a three-course Christmas dinner to the elderly and the homeless, completely free of charge. Notably, Shish is Muslim-owned, and despite the fact that the owners do not themselves celebrate Christmas, they still want to help others do so.

The restaurant posted all the information about the free dinner to Twitter a few weeks ago and encouraged others to retweet it in order to spread the word. According to the restaurant's tweet, the meal will include a starter course of soup and Cacik (Turkish cucumber salad), a chicken or vegetarian main course, and rice pudding for dessert. Sounds delicious.

Many Twitter users have responded to the restaurant's call for help in sharing information about the free dinner. People from all over have retweeted and commented on this beautiful and generous act. Shish isn't just feeding the homeless this Christmas; it's giving us all a little more hope.

America, The Beautiful — In 52 Incredible Photos

We live in a sea of images. You probably have a little device within reach right now that contains photos of everything from last weekend's brunch to last year's office Christmas party. Not to mention all the images you scroll through on Google, Facebook, and Instagram in any given day.

Because of that, the idea of a coffee-table book of photography may seem not only old-fashioned, but downright ridiculous. But, especially in our ever-connected age, there's something to be said for the power of curated images on the printed page. Plus, you can't wrap up and gift a Tumblr account this holiday season.

Taschen's The United States of America contains over 700 stunning images of all 50 states from National Geographic 's archive. The book is a state-by-state visual guide to more than 100 years of American history, from early black-and-white photos of the still-unsettled Western frontier to full-color shots of a post-Katrina New Orleans.

Ahead, we've culled together images from each of the 50 states (plus Guam and Washington, D.C.), one from each, to give you a glimpse into the sheer scope and scale of the remarkable collection — and our remarkable country.

Russell Crowe Will Not Be Charged In Azealia Banks Physical Altercation

Russell Crowe will not be charged for the alleged assault of Azaelia Banks, an accusation he denied from the start. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles DA's office told People that they are declining to prosecute the 52-year-old actor due to lack of sufficient evidence. In October, Banks, accused Crowe of spitting and choking her then throwing her out of his hotel room, while using racial epithets against her. But according to people who witnessed the incident — which took place at a small dinner party in the Beverly Hills Hotels, where Banks was musician RZA's plus-one — the scene unfolded quite differently.

“Several attendees describe Banks, not Crowe, as the assaultive party," read court documents obtained by People. Guests told the DA that Banks was being "verbally aggressive" with other guests — repeatedly using a racial epithet — and threatening "to break a glass to cut the throat of a female guest and/or Crowe." The witnesses also say that "they saw Crowe struggle with Banks to prevent her from using the glass she picked up, seemingly to carry out her threat." At this point, Crowe physically escorted Banks out of the room — an action the DA concluded "was justified to prevent the imminent violence threatened by Banks." This corroborates with RZA's version of events, which also pegs Banks as the aggressor. Neither Banks nor Crowe has commented on the news of the case being dropped; we will update this story should that change.

Our Favorite HBO Shows Of All Time

$

There's a reason everyone loves HBO. The premium cable network creates really awesome television. No conversation about the past, present, or future state of televised entertainment could be complete without mentioning HBO a few dozen times.

Because of this reigning ability to keep people hooked on its shows, HBO has been able to fund projects that would likely only ever work on HBO ( Game of Thrones, Westworld, Boardwalk Empire).

But there's a lot of unchartered territory on HBO. It's a little nerve-racking to start watching a series that has already ended, because that's one hell of a commitment, but with the holidays coming up and more downtime in the near future, now is the time.

Here, I've compiled the best of the best from HBO throughout the years, to inspire your next binge.

Enlightened (2011)

Laura Dern plays a damaged corporate executive who, after a brutal firing, artfully (and vengefully) finesses her way back into her workplace after finding her calming center at a rehab center in Hawaii. Although the series had a short life with only two seasons, it's fondly remembered for its indie nods and quirky characters.

The Sopranos (2007)

This show changed TV; it is frequently regarded as one of the best dramas of all time. If you haven't had the pleasure of diving deep into the world of Tony Soprano, then what are you waiting for?

Sex and the City (2004)

Whether your relationship status is single, taken, looking, or complicated, everyone can glean something from this too-true look at dating in a metropolis.

The Night Of (2016)

This crime thriller was the must-watch show of the summer. If you haven't already binged Naz's (Riz Ahmed's) heartbreaking and eye-opening journey from college student to tattooed criminal, it's time. If you did watch and are thirsty for more, check out Criminal Justice, the BBC series on which the HBO show was based.

Silicon Valley (2014)

This is a must-watch for anyone who uses technology, i.e. everyone. The real-life world of Silicon Valley is perfectly spoofed in this comedy series about a group of geeky coders trying to launch an app (while battling their rivals at a fictionalized Google).

Westworld (2016)

Sex, robots, mazes, mystery — this show checks all the boxes of a surefire HBO hit. The series is based on the 1973 film by the same name. Its confusing plot line will keep you on your toes as you waver back and forth between trusting the characters and quickly doubting everything you see. It's a wild ride.

Six Feet Under (2005)

Before Michael C. Hall was the oddly endearing Dexter, he was David Fisher, the middle child of a quirky, fucked-up family who lives in and runs a funeral home. Plus, the series was created by Alan Ball, who is also the mastermind behind True Blood and Banshee.

Netflix Knows Exactly What You Do After You Binge A Show

Remember the days when binge-watching a TV show meant shelling out for DVD box sets and having to put in a new disc every four episodes? Netflix has put those ancient techniques behind us, leaving fans to watch Stranger Things until their eyes are bloodshot and social life ignored. Now, the streaming service has figured out what you want to do after you've left the Upside Down — and, surprisingly, it's not watch more TV.

According to new data from Netflix, people need a palate cleanser between programs. Jumping from a heavy drama like Jessica Jones to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt might seem like a reasonable shift, but apparently that's not how most people operate in terms of viewing habits. Instead, Netflix has found that most people will watch a movie on the streaming platform after binging on a series.

It makes sense. If you just watched 10-plus hours of the same story, jumping into a new show can be overwhelming — err, well... as overwhelming as watching TV can possibly be. Personally, I'm always down to watch an old favorite (say, Mean Girls?) after spending hours watching a wildly unpredictable TV show. It's kind of like coming home and changing into sweats after spending the night out in a heels.

Once again, Netflix has proved it totally gets us.

Johnny Depp Is The Most Overpaid Actor In Hollywood For The Second Year In A Row

$

0

Throughout his career, Johnny Depp has received many awards and accolades, but he's probably not too proud about the latest honor he received.

Forbes has released its annual list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood, and Depp tops the list for the second year in a row. He also took home the prize in 2015.

According to the article, Depp's title was calculated based on how much money he took home per box office dollar earned, and "his last three movies returned just $2.80 at the box office for every $1 he was paid on them." For comparison, Will Smith ranked second, getting a $5 box office return for every $1 he was paid this year.

It wasn't long ago that Depp was one of the most bankable and highly sought-after actors in Hollywood, but after his divorce from wife Amber Heard revealed a string of unpalatable abuse allegations, it seems possible that audiences were less drawn to a Depp movie this year than they may have been in years past.

Depp starred in three major studio releases in 2016, which is pretty much on par with his career in recent years, but Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland, underwhelmed in box office numbers. Depp also had a small role in the Sundance release Yoga Hosers, and had a brief role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them(but will have a much bigger role in the sequel slated for 2018).

Next year, he'll reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and he's already got no less than three other movies in the works for 2017 alone. It's too soon to tell what next year will bring for Depp's career, but at least he can take comfort in the fact that he still makes major bank, public scrutiny aside.

5 Necklace Trends That'll Be Everywhere In 2017

$

0

If you have one delicate, special necklace you wear every single day (even in the shower), you might not consider how many rotating, clear-cut trends the jewelry category goes through every season. But, one look to the runways and the necks of celebrities, and you'll see just how many different styles enter the zeitgeist. And this year is no exception.

Similar to how we've seen dangling statement earrings rise in popularity this year, necklaces — and not just of the choker variety — are getting big. And in this case, more is definitely more. From fresh takes on personalized jewelry to long, oversized pendants we haven't seen since the early '00s, the pieces bound to be dominating 2017 will be leaving minimalism behind. Regardless of which trends you're planning to embrace, one thing's for sure: You're going to start paying way more attention to what's hanging around your neck. Click on for five styles you should make some room in your crammed jewelry box for.

New-Wave Personalization

Beyond the SJP-inspired nameplate (which has at this point been under fire for being cultural appropriation), personalized necklaces are going strong. Bella Hadid's been seen wearing this one on the regular. Whether it's an initialed dog tag or a more minimalist take on the nameplate, you can wear your name proud in 2017.

Danielle Guizio Gothic Choker Necklace, $180, available at Danielle Guizio.

Luna Skye 14kt Gold and Diamond Initial Mini Dog Tag Necklace, $1,250, available at Luna Skye.

Ariel Gordon Jewelry Name It Necklace, $595, available at Ariel Gordon Jewelry.

Hardware-Store Chic

If you feel like you could DIY a lot of the jewelry you've been seeing lately, well, it's because you sort of can. Heavy chainlink, mixed metals, and an overall punky, hardware-focused vibe is where it's at, meaning you might be able to skip a trip to the department store and instead make your way to your nearest Home Depot. Just wait until you see how good this trend looks with all your graphic long-sleeve tees and fashion hoodies.

Justine Clenquet x OC Lenny Choker, $100, available at Opening Ceremony.

Annelise Michelson Ellipse Chain Choker, $807, available at Annelise Michelson.

Them Bones Clean Chain, $129, available at Them Bones.

Is That...A Neck Brace?

One particular Forever 21 choker sent the internet into a frenzy, but the truth is, the next wave of tight neck pieces are wider than ever. Sure, some versions may give the illusion of a turtleneck, while others may look more like a neck brace. Either way, they're much more interesting than those dental-floss-thin numbers so many currently love.

Ribeyron Unisex Leather Stapled Choker in Yellow, $ 320 $192, available at LN-CC.

ASOS Wide Leather Tassel Wrapped Choker Necklace, $15.50, available at ASOS.

Forever 21 Metallic Choker, $5.90, available at Forever 21.

Penchant For Pendants

Thanks to this oversized cat pendant by Loewe that made waves during fashion month, we're predicting the comeback of the long oversized necklace in 2017. Could this be the antidote to the minimalist choker obsession? We're thinking yes. But don't worry, you don't have to go quite this large to embrace this look.

Loewe Cat Face leather necklace, $555, available at Selfridges & Co.

Zara Chain and Choker Pack, $22.90, available at Zara.

Leigh Miller Brass Crescent Necklace, $200, available at Leigh Miller.

Rainbow Brite

You never have to worry if a multi-colored necklace goes with your outfit — these happy jewels can spruce up everything from a T-shirt to an evening gown. Plus, you're likely to cheer people up wherever you go just by wearing one.

Urban Outfitters Eleni Rainbow Choker Necklace, $18, available at Urban Outfitters.

Susan Alexandra Lollipop Guild Necklace, $145, available at Susan Alexandra.

IAM by Ileana Makri Rainbow Rain Necklace, $340, available at Ylang 23.

The intersection of fandom and beauty reached an all-time high this year. Harry Potter -themed makeup palettes and brushes hit the internet, Marvel's Avengers cast got turned into lip balms, even the cult film Mean Girls had its moment in the makeup spotlight.

As the cosmetics category exploded with nods to TV shows, movies, and books so, too, did the nail category. Amateur and professional manicurists around the globe have been pulling inspiration from pop culture in seriously cool ways in 2016. We'd even venture to say that the fandom-inspired manis of late have been more jaw-dropping than many of the sold-out palettes on Etsy.

Whether or not you're interested in adorning yourself with all nine members of the Fellowship, you can't deny the skill that goes into teeny-tiny works of nail art. But really, don't you want to hop on the nostalgia train and check out some manicures that would make Joss Whedon proud? Or try out a subtle way to rock a Storm Trooper on your pointer? Keeping skin hydrated and glowing come winter can feel like an impossible feat — it’s brrr-isk out there, after all — and that makes for some pretty dry and flaky skin. As we learned on her site today, not so much.

The truth is, Jenner employs a whole host of skin hydrators and purifiers to help keep her complexion lit — no matter how cold the weather. Paris Jackson's New Tattoo Makes A Really Important Statement

When the Army Corps of Engineers delayed drilling for the Dakota Access pipeline, some celebs reacted by posting celebratory tweets. Paris Jackson, however, showed her support in a more permanent way — with a Standing Rock tattoo on her inner ankle.

The actress shared a photo of the fresh ink on Instagram yesterday with the hashtag “#noDAPL.”

#noDAPL

A photo posted by Paris-Michael K. Jackson (@parisjackson) on

The post followed another from Jackson, which gave a shout out to a Standing Rock fundraising page on Facebook. The group formed to raise money for the movement via tattoo designs created by Stephanie Big Eagle, a descendant of the Oceti Sakowin nation. According to the page, all proceeds from application of the body art will help fund legal defense teams, winterization of camps, arctic gear, travel needs, and camp supplies for reservation groups. As Jackson points out on Instagram, those opposing the pipeline are calling for further advocacy in light of the recent decision to delay.

This isn't the first meaningful tattoo Jackson has had inked on her body. This year alone, she has added designs that honor her grandmother, brother, late father, and other music icons, like Prince and David Bowie.

You Saw Chewbacca Mom, But What About Facebook's Other Viral Videos?

$

It's hard to pinpoint exactly where the first viral video came from, or, for that matter, who made it, but it certainly wasn't Facebook. It was only this past January that Facebook opened up Live, it's live-streaming tool, to the general public, after previously previously rolling it out to a select group of VIP users.

But it only took a few months for Facebook Live to get its first viral sensation: Chewbacca Mom. If you never thought you'd see those two words together, you're not alone. Candace Payne proved that with an iPhone and a profile page, you could become a viral sensation in the same way that people had on YouTube and Vine (may it RIP).

While you probably saw, or at least heard about, Chewbacca Mom, you probably haven't seen all of the other most popular Live videos of 2016, which Facebook announced today in its year in review. Now's your chance. Count down to number one and prepare to feel almost every emoji emotion in existence, below.

10. Super Deluxe's Election Map

Turns out, people really like dark humor.

9. Dena Blizzard's Chardonnay Go

Correction: This app is not just for moms. It's for Friday nights. Let's Chardonnay go!

8. CNN's Empire State

Five hours of epic music, plus epic lights on an epic building combined to create one astoundingly boring video.

7. Viral Thread's Population Count

This four-hour-long countdown was one of the most simple, yet accurate, ways of representing emotions around the election.

6. Under The Hood's Wood Truck

26 million people watched a video of a truck made out of wood, proving that if you build it, they will watch. Some winning lines: "Well, it will never rust," and, "Never seen anything like it. It's all wood. All wood. Everything."

If you have any doubt, it really is all wood — unless you're counting the tires and all the machinery it takes to make a car run. But those don't matter, right?

5. NBC News' Election Results

Note: If you don't want to relive election night, you'd best avoid watching this video.

4. Atlanta Buzz's Hugs For Police Officers

11 heartwarming minutes of hugs (and some handshakes).

3. BuzzFeed's Presidential Countdown

We take it back. This is the most simple, yet genius, Live video to date.

2. Ted Yoder's Soundscapes

What can you do on hammered dulcimer? A hell of a lot, folk artist Ted Yoder proved (to the tune of over 2.7 million views!).

1. Candace Payne's Chewbacca Mom

The mom, the mask, the legend. Candace Payne showed us that sometimes it really is the "simple joys in life" that count. That, and one ridiculous, howling laugh.

If you need any inspiration to attempt your own viral Facebook Live in 2017, just know that Payne had, as of June, earned almost $500,000. Not too shabby for four minutes spent talking in a car.

My Instagram feed is perpetually filled with pets, which is exactly how I like it. As much as I want to know the happenings of celebrities I admire, it's their dogs, cats, and other furry pals that keep me coming back to the app. Now Insta scrollers don't have to hope for a celebrity to post a cute pic: Many celebrity pets now have their very own Instagram accounts, and they're must-follows.

The four-legged best friends of your favorite A-listers may live better than all of us, but that's exactly why they make such a great follow. While you might rage with envy every time you see a celeb taking a selfie behind the wheel of (yet another) luxury vehicle, seeing one of her dogs pretending to drive is automatically the cutest thing ever.

This is yet another instance of pets proving to be better than people — even at social media.

While we know that the pets can't set up their own Instagram accounts (because they don't have thumbs necessary for easy Liking, obviously), a few celebrity owners have been kind enough to help their little friends share their exploits with us. These L.A. Hairstyle Trends Are Going To Be Huge — & Are Shockingly Easy To Copy

Laura Polko is one of the hottest up-and-coming hairstylists to watch in Hollywood. Collaborating almost exclusively alongside some of the top makeup artists of the moment — and swiftly adding to an already impressive client list — she's making her mark on the L.A. beauty zeitgeist.

As a SoCal transplant, she isn't taking these opportunities in the hair spotlight for granted; she's churning out tons of killer styles that demand double-taps on social media and write-ups on the biggest sites. Think: sexy, messy ponytails for Kim Kardashian; enviably soft waves for Olivia Munn; sultry bedhead for Ashley Benson; and artful adornment for Chrissy Teigen.

Of course, her days haven't always been filled with the Kardashians of the world: Ohio-born and raised, she flew the coop for New York after beauty school. She started working at a salon, parlayed that into catalogue work, then called in sick from work for her first big break: assisting on a humble Fanta commercial. Then, through a friend, she got an opportunity to work with Benson — and the rest is history. "The click-over was no joke. [Benson] posted one picture and I went from, like, 3,000 followers to around 10,000 on Instagram," Polko recalls. Shortly after, she packed her bags for L.A.

We're not the only ones to notice. Today, drugstore hair-care brand Aussie announced Polko as its new ambassador. This is a major coup, and one that Polko says is a natural fit, thanks to her desire to make her work (and the products she uses) approachable and fuss-free. To celebrate, we tapped the hairstylist to walk us through some of her raddest recent looks.

Ahead, Polko shares the products she relies on, the styles her clients are requesting the most, and the clever techniques she's loving now.

The Trick: Layer in gel and mousse.

Scoring slicked-back hair with hold and shape, without a hard finish or megawatt shine, requires strategic product-layering. "The hair has to be damp, but not wet, then you layer gel into the root, working it in in small sections," Polko explains. For fine or thin hair, repeat with mousse; thick hair can opt out of the second step.

Then section the hair — working quickly to prevent the hair from air-drying — and blowdry small sections back with a round brush, starting at the crown and ending at the hairline. Hit the ends with a flat iron to finish the look. Try Aussie's gel and smoothing mousse for this look.

Photo: Courtesy of Laura Polko.

The Trick: Try the braid, iron, and shake.

"Ashley arrived this day and said, 'I want my hair to look like yours!'" Polko says. "Of course, what I had done was put my hair in a side-braid before going to hot yoga, and then I didn't have time to wash it after."

The cheat? Create four to six medium-sized braids, starting a few inches down from the roots. Spray with hairspray, then hit 'em with a flat iron to create the bends. Allow the braids to cool, then just shake them out and go, Polko says.

Photo: Courtesy of Laura Polko.

The Trick: Hit up the craft store.

"This is actually ribbon that I bought from a craft store," Polko says about the modern elastic cover you see here. It's easy to copy: Create your ponytail — Polko used a bungee elastic for a tight finish and a hair piece for extra volume through the pony — then simply wrap the ribbon around the elastic, trim, and glue in place. Polko used extension glue, but any strong-hold formula will work. (You may want to enlist a friend to help with this look.)

The Trick: Run your hands over your style as the last step.

A mussed-up, sexy, frizz-meets-flyaway look — notably found in the J.Crew catalogue each season — comes to life on Olivia Munn here. The imperfect hair balances the vampy, precise makeup and plunging neckline. Bonus? It's easy to soften an updo or braid without messing up your hair work if you follow Polko's advice.

"Use the palm of your hand, not your fingers, to loosen the hair," Polko says. "If you use your fingers to pull chunks of the hair, you'll end up with a few long strands hanging out." Instead, as the last step in styling, run your hands against the direction of the hair, going in little circles, until little pieces start falling out and a halo of fuzzies appear. C'est chic!

The Trick: Spray your fingers with hairspray before braiding — not your hair.

Want your braids to hold while still looking and feeling soft and natural? Don't even think about misting your hair directly with hairspray. "I spray hairspray onto my fingers before I braid," Polko says. "This ensures that the hair gets extra grit and hold, but isn't sticky, [which makes it so] I can't separate the hair as I braid." Polko keeps a travel-size of her favorite hairspray, Mega Hairspray, on hand.

The Trick: Layer beach spray into wet hair before blowdrying.

It takes work to look like you just rolled out of bed. In fact, scoring dry, messy texture, especially when working with very curly or very fine hair, takes work. Here, Polko layered beach spray into Kardashian's locks before blowdrying to score this enviable body.

Tip: She gave Kim K.'s style added bends using a flat iron, not a curling iron, to keep it more "wild."

The Trick: Cage that pony!

Polko has given Chrissy Teigen more than one artful style using stretchy cord she picked up at a craft store. Here, she used the material to make a low pony ultra-cool and modern.

Polko created a classic low pony, then knotted the end of a piece of cord around the hair elastic holding the pony. The rest is simple: Just wrap, wrap, and wrap some more, knotting the ends after the entire look feels secure. Add a few bobby pins for even more interest. (See the side, here.)

The Trick: The looser the fishtail, the closer to sexy.

This hybrid look is part braid, part low pony — and 100% soft and romantic. Create a smooth, low ponytail and secure with a clear elastic. Then loosely create a fishtail and secure. Short and sweet.

The Trick: Load in conditioner or oil — but don't rinse.

High-shine finishes require product that will look shiny and glossy, but not greasy. To score this look, Polko suggests coating hair with a very light amount of a mask or treatment, like coconut oil. "As long as your hair is long enough to pull it all back, and you don't have a lot of pieces that are going to fall out, you can use 3 Minute Miracle Moist as a styling product," Polko says. The idea isn't new, but it is a miraculous move for adding health to your hair.

The Trick: Wrap, don't curl.

"This was more of a structured bend that was meant to look like it was from the day before," Polko says about the look she gave Munn here.

"Olivia's hair needs a lot of prep because it's so healthy, so it doesn't hold as well, so I layered in texture spray to bulk it up, then round-brushed it to get a little lift." Then, she wrapped random sections around an iron, going away from the face. "Randomly do a few pieces going forward so it doesn't all turn into a retro wave," she advises.

The Trick: Don't curl your ends.

Polko reminds us of a trick we often take for granted: Don't curl your ends, she says. "Barrel curls start looking like prom curls when you curl the ends," she jokes. Instead, stop the bends or curls an inch or two from your ends for a modern, lived-in finish.

The Trick: Don't go cheap with clip-in bangs.

"Fake bangs are always fun — but the problem is getting them to match," Polko explains. The secret is obvious: "You really have to match the color." Munn's hair is dark and shiny, which makes them easier to match, but those with dimension should consider going big. "When I did Chrissy's [fake bangs], I had to have them highlighted to match, but once you do, you can have them for years," she says.

Twitter Is Losing It Over This "Clorox Bath Bomb" Beauty Fail

Bath bombs represent so much more than a way to start a soak: the vividly colored, happiness-inducing, and effervescent spheres signal reprieve from a cold, dark world — all while evoking childlike wonder. The fizz! The colors! The scent! So imagine how hilariously disorienting it would be to have this happy place be usurped by a toilet-bowl cleaner. That’s right: a toilet-bowl cleaner.

That’s just the hand that Kayla Harris was dealt when she tossed a Clorox Bleach and Blue Toilet Bowl Cleaner disk into the bath recently, thinking it was a Lush Bath Bomb. As Hello Giggles reports, Harris shared the disappointing outcome on Twitter. “I’m so upset. My first bath bomb and it wasn’t even real,” she shares in the post. “It stained my hand.”

This isn’t the first time someone has mistaken the two bathroom products for each other. Some have accidentally bombed their toilets when cleaning:

Lush, which is pretty much winning Twitter this week, feels Harris' pain. “Toilet-bowl cleaners just don't compare,” the brand wrote on Twitter. “DM us and we'll make sure you both get the real bath-bomb experience.” How’s that for a silver lining?

Gigi Hadid Reveals She Has A Thyroid Disease

Gigi Hadid made a big announcement during a panel with Reebok on December 7. Hadid sat alongside Ruby Rose, Aly Raisman, Zoe Kravitz, and Lena Dunham and bluntly talked about her social media detox, her career so far, and her health. She also spoke about her ailments when she revealed that she has Hashimoto's, a thyroid disease, Elle reports.

The 21-year-old said she has been taking medicine for the disease for the past two years, but still struggles to maintain a normal metabolism. She spoke about the disease in reference to her weight loss and muscle gain for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

"My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year," she told the crowd. "I have Hashimoto's disease. It's a thyroid disease, and it's now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the VS show I didn't want to lose any more weight, I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that's good."

Hashimoto's is also called chronic lymphocyctic thyroiditis, according to The Mayo Clinic. Luckily, treatment of the disease is simple and effective. It occurs when someone's immune system attacks the thyroid gland, which controls our bodies' hormonal functions. Although it is most often found in middle-aged women, it can occur in men and women of all ages. Unfortunately, Hadid's mother and younger sister, Bella, 19, both have chronic Lyme disease, which comes with much more severe daily ailments.

This Adorable Blending Tool Is The Best New Way To Apply Makeup

Between our comprehensive library of makeup brushes and borderline religious devotion to the life-changing Beautyblender, we thought for sure we had all the beauty tool bases covered. But lately there’s been an increasing amount of evidence floating around the web that there might just be life beyond blenders and brushes.

Exhibit A: the SiliSponge. After an eagle-eyed Reddit user discovered the smooth, clear maybe-maybe-not silicone makeup applicator buried in the depths of the internet, beauty obsessives everywhere jumped on the opportunity to expand their horizons. It's the next best thing to a slightly suspicious (and now sold out) blending device with no user reviews to speak of — a silicone bra insert, of course. (We beauty aficionados are nothing if not resourceful.)

But the SiliSponge (or something like it) isn’t the only option for those looking to experiment with makeup-blending alternatives. Airfrov tipped us off to the existence of the Heme Baby Q Transparent Puff. The plastic tool looks a lot like a firm, teardrop-shaped, adorable piece of silicone, and it works by applying makeup to the skin without absorbing any at all.

According to the reviewer, the Baby Q feels to the touch like a damp Beautyblender, and the ergonomic shape makes it easy to access every nook and cranny of your face. It’s supposedly eco-friendly, easy to clean, free of bacteria, long-lasting (it’s said to have a lifespan of 10 years), and just as suited for applying powder makeup as it is for cream and liquid, which we find hard to believe. The Baby Q would have to be magic for it to be all those things at once, right?

So the question is, then, Is the Baby Q magic? You can decide for yourself by watching the video demonstration on YouTube, or if you’re willing to pay the SGD-to-USD conversion price and the straight-from-Singapore shipping and handling necessary to purchase one from Airfrov.
