Yes, You Can Eat Your Way To Healthier Hair

The benefits of a balanced diet have been drilled into our brains from the first time we laid eyes on the food pyramid. If you eat well, you'll feel well. Not so groundbreaking, right? But the effects of a balanced diet on hair, on the other hand, are a little less ubiquitous. That’s a shame, because the food you eat actually has a huge impact on hair growth, shine, strength, and softness — so pretty much everything that matters. Bet they didn't teach you that in elementary school.

So get your shopping list ready. Because together with Hair Food, the paraben-free hair-care brand inspired by nourishing ingredients, and advice from top nutritionists, we’re breaking down exactly how to snack, munch, chew (and wash!) your way to deliciously healthy hair. Spoiler alert: Avocados are definitely on the menu.

For Strong Hair, Eat: Citrus fruits, pears, nectarines

In the beauty world, vitamin C is already an established MVP — when it comes to your skin. But it also plays an equally big role in your hair. “Vitamin C is essential to building collagen in our bodies,” explains nutritionist Keri Gans, RDN. “And collagen, which is a connective tissue that gives structure, is important for hair strength and growth.” A deficiency in it could actually lead to breakage, dry hair, and more split ends than usual. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Taking a vitamin C supplement is fine, but it's always better to eat the real thing. And if you just can't get enough, add the Hair Food Color Protect with White Nectarine & Pear shampoo and conditioner to your shower caddy (not your kitchen cabinet, obviously). The fruity scent lingers after you turn off the water, while the nourishing formula helps your hair color stick around longer between salon appointments.

For Long Hair, Eat: Avocados, eggs, almonds

The vitamin B family is an overachieving bunch, since its members (like B6, B9, and B12) take care of everything from red-blood-cell production to brain development. In terms of hair health, though, biotin, or B7, is hands-down the best. So much so that it’s common in most beauty and hair-growth supplements.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a magic bullet for cartoon princess hair, since it mostly only matters if you’re low on it. “A deficiency of biotin causes hair loss,” explains Lisa Drayer, RD, nutritionist and author of The Beauty Diet. “But studies haven’t demonstrated that people who have adequate levels of it benefit from ingesting even more.” That’s why it’s way easier to make sure you’re getting biotin via your food — instead of shelling out money for supplements you might not even need. The good news? Avocados, the entire world's favorite food, are packed with it.

For Resilient Hair, Eat: Lean meats, fish, eggs, peanut butter, Greek yogurt

Hair itself is primarily made up of keratin — a.k.a. protein — which gives hair its strength and elasticity. “Without enough protein, the texture of your hair can change,” says Drayer. “It can result in hair that's dull, dry, thin, and brittle.” As if that’s not bad enough, skimping on it can even make your hair color look washed out or uneven in tone. But it’s not like you have to go Paleo in order to score benefits. Instead, just be sure that at least 25% of your daily calories are from protein, suggests Drayer.

For Hair That Sticks Around, Eat: Vanilla, dark chocolate, cranberries, chamomile tea

Hair basically broadcasts your general health to the world — which is why it suffers as much as you do when you’re pulling late nights at work and living on takeout. “Stress can do crazy things to our bodies, including our hair,” says Gans. Enough of it can even exacerbate hair loss.

An easy solution is vanilla; studies have shown that just the scent of it can reduce stress and anxiety. If you don’t happen to be cooking with it on a regular basis (really, who is?), try incorporating it into your routine in other ways. The Hair Food Hair Milk with Jasmine & Vanilla shampoo and conditioner smell as yummy as the name suggests. The vanilla-scent will keep you feeling blissed out, while also hydrating and smoothing your hair for extra shine. And since stress and inflammation are closely connected — chronic stress actually causes low-level inflammation throughout the body — stock up on anti-inflammatory foods, like dark chocolate, just in case.

For Shiny Hair (& A Healthy Scalp!), Eat: Fatty fish, like salmon and tuna

Omega-3s are kind of like the superstars of the health world (and the reason fish-oil pills are so popular). While they’re vital for both heart health and smooth skin, they’re also essential for hair. “Omega-3 fatty acids are needed to build the cell membranes in the skin of your scalp and maintain the natural oil that keeps your scalp and hair from drying out,” explains Drayer. Without them, you’re susceptible to eczema and even dandruff (so if you have scalp issues, this could be why). As for vitamin D, “there’s research that suggests it may actually help create new hair follicles, therefore increasing hair growth,” says Gans. Longer, stronger hair? Bring on the sushi.

For Soft Ha ir, Eat: Red meat, dark-meat turkey, beans, oysters, clams

Pumping iron makes you stronger — and scarfing it down does the same for your hair. Since iron is responsible for shuttling oxygen and nutrients around the body, explains Gans, not getting enough means that your hair might not receive the vital nutrition it needs. “A lack of iron can cause hair to feel dry and rough,” adds Drayer. “Plus, it can also lead to hair loss.” Um, no thank you. On the plus side, iron-rich foods like red meat and shellfish tend to be high in protein and zinc, too — so you’re getting a big beauty bang for your bite.

Ellen Pompeo Says Her Age Kept Her On Grey's Anatomy

She's certainly not too old to be in Taylor Swift's squad, but Ellen Pompeo felt like she was too old to embark on a film career in her 30s. And that, friends, is why Meredith Grey is just about the only character on Grey's Anatomy who hasn't bit the dust in a plane crash or been hit by a bus.

The 46-year-old actress told People that staying on the ABC medical drama seemed like a smart career move given her (cough) advanced age. Here's the part where you scream when you find out she was only 33 at the time.

“My decision to stay on Grey’s was based solely on age,” she shared. “At 33, I was wise enough to know my clock was already ticking in Hollywood.”

The mother of two, who appeared in films such as Moonlight Mile and Old School before Shondaland came calling, explained that she "was definitely aware of how challenging it would be to find other roles in my late 30s and early 40s" if she left the show.

"I thought, ‘Why would I leave something that is super-successful and pays me great to search the landscape?'" she said. "I decided that I would stay on Grey’s and be grateful and try to ride it out for as long as I could. And I am very happy that I made the decision to stay. It’s only gotten better with time.”

The actress did add, however, that watching herself age on the small screen is "miserable."

So yeah, that's all pretty depressing. On the bright side, we've still got our Mer — so long as she doesn't board any planes, of course.

Jared Padalecki Says Fans May Be "Unhappy" With Rory's Love Life On Gilmore Girls Reboot

Jared Padalecki isn't sugarcoating Rory Gilmore's love life in the upcoming Gilmore Girls reboot. In fact, the actor who played Rory's first boyfriend, Dean Forester, warns that fans may be "unhappy" about it.

But before you start worrying that the four-part Netflix series will ruin your precious Gilmore memories, Padalecki told Us Weekly that when it comes to Rory's romantic life, "There will always be some fans who are unhappy, but I think they'll be pleased with it."

It's already been revealed that Rory will start the revival single. Given that all three of her ex-boyfriends — Dean, Jess, and Logan — will appear on the show, it's unlikely she'll stay that way.

Don't expect her to end up with her high school sweetheart, though. David Sutcliffe, who played Rory's dad Christopher, may have already spoiled those hopes when he mused, "I know they’re not going to end up together but, Rory and Dean seem like a good couple." Padalecki confirmed as much by telling Us Weekly that he only spent one day on set.

For those who are Team Dean, though, Padalecki did say that in the limited time he spent in Stars Hollow (due to his Supernatural schedule), there "was a really good amount of stuff I got to do, and explained a lot."

So it appears that Dean is going to get his moment, something Padalecki revealed last month. "Dean has a cool scene in the market he used to work at," he said. "It's a nice, a really nice scene that gave me closure."

Whether you're happy with Rory's love life or not, Padalecki made it clear to Us Weekly that Gilmore Girls fans will definitely be happy with the revival as a whole.

"Amy [Sherman-Palladino] didn't come back to fuck it up," Padalecki said. "She came back to do it right, and she did it right."

Amid sweltering temperatures and the party’s own simmering scandal over an email hack that prompted the Democratic National Committee chairperson's resignation, the 2016 Democratic National Convention is officially set to begin.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is expected to formally become her party’s choice for the White House after a roll call vote on Tuesday, but some of the delegates loyal to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders have pledged to take the fight all the way to the convention floor.

Hundreds of Sanders supporters protested against Clinton on Sunday, and hundreds marched from Camden, NJ, to Philadelphia on Monday to gather outside City Hall. As leadership calls for unity, some delegates are concerned about the party's ability to come together before November, when Clinton is expected to take on Republican nominee Donald Trump.

As delegates arrived and prepared for what promises to be one of the biggest weeks in their party's history, female Democrats shared their thoughts with Refinery29.

Editor's note: We asked Republican women about their feelings in Cleveland, too. Read that story here. Refinery29’s News team is on the ground covering the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention. Megan Srinivas

Iowa Delegate

"I'm just really excited to be able to be a part of voting on the platform, and for Hillary," Srinivas told Refinery29.

She said she has been a fan of Hillary Clinton since 2008.

"I was going to college in Boston at the time, and the caucus was the night before my organic chemistry final, and I actually flew back to place my very first caucus vote for her. She has long stood for every principle I believe in, from women's health rights to healthcare access for children, and just fighting for the underdog who doesn't often have a voice. And it doesn't matter if she's going against the tide or all the naysayers — she is there to stand up for what she believes in and truly carry through on her words."

Lore Elisabeth, (right)

Germantown, PA

Elisabeth backs Sanders. But she's planning on voting for Clinton in the fall, since she sees her as the "lesser of two evils" compared to Donald Trump.

"The most important issues [to me] are civil rights, LGBTQ equality, climate change, obviously, equal pay, women’s rights," she said.

Nicole Butler Talley

Black Girls Vote organization

"We have a clear purpose going into November. Whichever nominee comes out, because there's a chance it might not be Hillary, it could be Bernie, whoever it is, we have to have a clear purpose of winning in November."

She said Black Girls Vote is not only working to register people to vote, but also informing them about the candidates' policy stances.

"It's not just about voting, even though that's the first step and the main step. There are other things that you need to consider," she said.

Aisha Alyaseen

Originally from Kuwait, now living in Philadelphia

"I don’t believe in your election because I think everyone should vote individually. I don’t like the [superdelegate] system. Back in my country, we have also a voting system. I like my country where everyone has to choose one [candidate] and they count the votes directly. All are equal," she said.

Lexi Lanka

Omaha, NE

Lanka, a Bernie Sanders supporter, came to Philadelphia to participate in pro-Sanders demonstrations.

"I support all his ideals, but it’s also cool to see a group of people come together — with or without him — to make change," she said.

Natalie Vowell

Missouri Delegate

“This has been my go-to campaign gear: this Bernie sash. The day of the presidential-preference primary, I decided, Dress like the event you wish you were going to. So we are just going to dress like it’s Bernie’s inauguration until the end of the campaign. Here we are at the DNC, and this is the big time."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Vowell said what she was most excited about has already happened.

"I was most looking forward to Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepping down, and that’s already happened, so I think we are going to have better leadership and [a] more fair chair, so it’s going to be interesting."

Melanie Draper

Portland, OR

"At this point, I’m closest to Jill Stein and will be voting for her come November."

Lorraine Hatcher

Guest of Washington Delegation

"I'm here to support Hillary, and I'm excited for at least two reasons. First and foremost, I think she is the most qualified person to be president of the United States. Secondly, I'm excited because I think that she will bring this country back together again after all the divisive and disgusting kinds of rhetoric that have come from the Republican side."

Hatcher also had strong words for Sanders supporters who don't want to support Clinton.

"I think for many of the Bernie Sanders people, their issues are more systemic, having little to do with this electoral process. They're the generation whose parents never told them no, that got trophies for participation as opposed to winning, and don't understand really what the democratic process is. So, really, what we will see here in the next couple of days is them doing a Donald Trump-like temper tantrum, stomping their feet…things like that. I think they'll go away, which is unfortunate, because I would rather that they become part of the democratic process."

Knoxville, TN

"I came here to support Bernie, march in the protests, go to the rallies, and show support…I will be voting in November, but I won’t be voting for Hillary."

Liz Cole and Chicken the dog

Philadelphia

"I’m very grateful to Bernie Sanders for energizing so many people and getting so many people to actively take a stance," Cole said.

"I’m feeling very strongly about Bernie Sanders, so it might be a tough call, but I will vote for the Democratic ticket. I’m not voting for Trump."

Former Miss New Jersey

"I don’t live in a swing state thankfully, but I could never vote for Hillary Clinton," she said. "She is everything I stand against."

Dannielle Owens-Reid

Los Angeles

The 30-year-old said that Sanders was the first candidate to really light a political spark for her, so much so that she had his face tattooed on her arm.

"I was inspired by Obama — he came to my school and spoke and I thought he was really amazing, but I was like two-and-a-half blocks from Grant Park when we found out that he won [in 2008], and I was at a Hanson concert. And after [the concert], we got on a bus and got home. We didn’t go to Grant Park," she said. "But if Bernie was there, I would have been there."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Allison Vail

Colorado Delegate

"I’ve been supporting Bernie from the very beginning. I saw him in Denver when he came last year, very early in his campaign. I have been following his career as a politician for at least a decade, and as soon as he announced that he was running, I knew that he was the man I would support," she said.

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Vail had mixed feelings about supporting Hillary Clinton, however.

"That poses a little bit of a problem for me. I’m also a party-elected official. So I have to support my candidate, our nominated candidate. What I [will] do in the privacy of my own ballot booth, I’m not sure yet."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Kim Netherton

Colorado At-Large Delegate

"I’m most hoping Bernie Sanders will be the Democratic nominee for president,” she said. “I think it’s a contested convention. Hillary Clinton doesn’t have the delegates to win; Bernie doesn’t have the delegates to win, so it’s up to us to convince people to vote for Bernie. He’s a stronger candidate; he can beat Trump. Everybody keeps talking about how terrible and horrible Trump is, and it’s true, but if the DNC were as worried as they say they are, they would choose Bernie Sanders who polls higher and has more support."

Georgia State Senator

"I'm here to support Hillary!"

Diana Hatsis-Neuhoff

Florida Delegate

"I’m looking to nominate the Democrat. I am an absolute Bernie Sanders supporter. But if [Hillary] is the nominee… My intention is to get the Democratic nominee elected."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Hatsis-Neuhoff said the convention is about more than just finding unity.

"I see unity, but we also want to hold the Democratic nominee’s feet to the fire with a Democratic platform that is progressive. We worked really hard to make it progressive, and if there is any steering away from that progressive platform, we will be loud, we will be heard, and we hold the Democratic nominee’s feet to the fire to stay with that progressive message."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Fay Herold

Alaska Guest Delegate

"I'm looking for a nomination for Bernie Sanders on a contested convention floor fight," she said. "I am confident in my soul that it will happen. It's happened before. The last time it happened was FDR, and he bucked the system in the same way Bernie has. Nobody ever thought he would win, but he won his nomination on a contested convention floor, and he became one of the most beloved presidents we have ever had."

Photographed By Nathaniel Welch/Redux.

Herold shows off her buttons.

"My mom is 90, and she remembers FDR, and she believes Bernie is very much like him. So, we have faith, we have hope, and we have belief that [he] is the best for our country."

In addition to holding hands with Taylor Swift, Tom Hiddleston is an actor. An actor who sometimes has to drop trou.

Viewers may recall that steamy sex scene in AMC's The Night Manager, during which T-Hiddy bared his bum while faux-sexing co-star Elizabeth Debicki. The role has already earned Hiddleston an Emmy nomination. Now it's won his butt a trophy of its own.

Turns out the British actor has been sitting on the 2016 Rear of the Year, which last year went to Daniel Radcliffe. During Comic-Con, Hiddleston told E!'s Marc Malkin he was "grateful" for the recognition, but found the attention a "bit strange."

Maybe he can put the award — which we imagine being some sort of golden toilet seat — next to Swift's Grammys?

Oh, and in case you missed those buns the first time, feel free to take a (NSFW) peek below.

We love getting cooking tips from celebrities. Whether it's Chrissy Teigen teaching us how to make the perfect boiled eggs via Snapchat, or Kylie Jenner sharing her favorite slider recipe on her app, we're all ears. With this in mind, we were beyond excited to discover even Sir Ian McKellen had a little culinary wisdom to impart upon us.

Sir Ian McKellen, a.k.a Gandalf, a.k.a. the celebrity we most wish was our grandpa, appeared in a video where he shows us step-by-step how to make what he claims are "the best scrambled eggs in the world." McKellen learned the recipe from his step-mother Gladys, and he says, it's his favorite breakfast.

The three essential ingredients in these perfect scrambled eggs are pretty simple: half and half (or milk), butter, salt, pepper and, of course, eggs. The actor doesn't offer exact measurements of the ingredients but says it takes some guess work. Most notably, he doesn't whip up the eggs, milk, and seasoning before putting them in the pan. Instead, he cracks the eggs straight into the pan and begins mixing up all the ingredients once the heat is on.

McKellen proposes listening to the radio or chatting with your "beloved" while you cook your eggs, which might be the most precious cooking suggestions we've ever heard. Other impressive tips teach us exactly when to take the eggs off the heat and the right pan to use. He finishes his video by tasting his perfectly scrambled eggs and wishing his viewers a happy breakfast in his charming British accent.

Do you remember Mia Thermopolis, the crowned princess of Genova? Of course you do.

It's been 15 years since the world was introduced to Mia (Anne Hathaway) in The Princess Diaries. She was an ordinary girl thrown into extraordinary circumstances — specifically, a newly discovered royal lineage. Going from high school nerd to fairy-tale princess didn't seem like the smoothest transition, but somehow it seemed totally relatable.

Anne Hathaway won our hearts — and went on to play Mia once more in The Princess Diaries 2. Before the death of beloved director Garry Marshall, Hathaway had even hinted at the possibility of a third movie(which we can only hope still happens).

A decade and a half after we fell in love with this fairy tale, the cast is still going strong. Click through to see what happened to all your favorite cast members.

Someone Spent Nearly 11 Hours Talking To A Zappos Customer Service Rep

Customer service news is rarely good news, since usually there's more to gripe than gush about. Zappos' latest feat is definitely an exception. The Amazon-owned e-comm recently logged its longest customer service call, ever, clocking in at 10 hours and 43 minutes.

The employee, Steven Weinstein, initially was helping the unnamed customer order three or four items. But they went on to discuss "everything from the best vacations they’ve taken to stories about their hometowns and childhoods," according to a Zappos rep.

"Even though I never spoke to this customer before in my life, I felt like I knew her for 15 or 20 years," Weinstein, pictured below, told Refinery29. "It was just natural, and time was flowing; it felt like it was effortless."

And, yes, Weinstein did leave the call for "a few minutes" to use the restroom two-and-a-half hours into the magical marathon call. (His coworkers kindly brought him food and water throughout.)

Photo: Courtesy of Zappos.

It's not the first time a Zappos customer service call lasted nearly an entire day: Four years ago, the footwear-focused site reported a 10-hour, 29-minute call with a customer.

"In many other call-center environments, an employee's job performance depends on how quickly they can get the customer off the phone," Tony Hsieh, CEO, told us. "At Zappos, we encourage employees to stay on the phone for as long as the customer wants, even if it's over 10 hours long. We know it sounds crazy, but as long as the customer is happy, then we are happy, too."

Honestly, it's hard to imagine spending over 10 hours on the phone with anyone. But there are, evidently, people who can do that. And if that's not a testament to good customer service, we're not sure what is.

What It's Like To Date A Man Who Won't Read Women Writers

$
0
0

“Do you like Zadie Smith?” I screamed over the sound of rock music blasting from the speakers of a tropical-themed bar in Brooklyn.

“Who?!” My Tinder date shouted back. He'd described himself in his profile as a 25-year-old journalist living in Bushwick. I try to go out with fellow writers because I think it gives us common ground on a first date, and I assumed he just couldn't hear my Zadie Smith question because the bar was deafening.

“She wrote On Beauty and White Teeth,” I replied, thinking he would recognize the titles, at least. “I'm not sure if I know her. Does she write for Vice?” he asked.

I paused, trying to keep my casual first-date smile from turning into a grimace. No, Zadie Smith does not write for Vice. But it was what he said next that really made me raise an eyebrow: "I don't really know much about any books that are out right now,” he told me, without a hint of embarrassment. “Or any women writers. I've never read a book published before 2005.”

Annoyingly enough, I can’t say I was surprised: One thing I’ve learned dating in New York is that it’s easy to find men who read, but it’s very difficult to find men who read novels written by women. Sure, I read about the trend of men starting their own book clubs, but I'm talking about female writers in particular. Once, an architect, during a lunch-break date in Midtown one sunny afternoon, told me he doesn’t read anything written in the last century. Another time, a Williamsburg dweller said he hadn’t heard of the award-winning novel Swamplandia!, but wanted to educate me on Karl Ove Knausgård’s My Struggle. So this Bushwick date was part of a larger trend.

Over drinks, while my date launched into an impassioned speech about Cormac McCarthy, I made some shrewd calculations: McCarthy hadn't come out with a book recently, right? Was it possible that his last novel was released in 2005? I confessed that I had read a McCarthy novel, but I couldn’t remember which one. He probed me for clues, but all I could come up with was that it seemed like an old Western, and maybe a key female character had died.

Last year, when I read the Cormac McCarthy book, I was preparing to move across the country, working 50-hour weeks, shedding a dysfunctional relationship, and experiencing more intense episodes of anxiety than I had in years. Reading was one of the only things that helped to quiet the din in my brain. I was constantly escaping into a book: Between the World and Me, The Folded Clock, A Little Life, Citizen: An American Lyric. “It was probably No Country for Old Men,” my date suggested, looking a little smug. I flashed a tight smile and took a sip of my beer, about to apologize for not recalling more.

But then I stopped myself. Why should I feel bad for not remembering the details of one of his reading picks when he didn’t recognize one of the most lauded female authors of contemporary literature? And furthermore, why should I regret not knowing more about a novel written by a man when my date was so quick to confess that he mostly read books from the lauded canon of Dead White Guy literature?

Unfortunately, this guy is far from alone, and the frequency of these sorts of interactions is troubling to me. Growing up, we’re assigned classic novels written by men in school, and are consistently told that those books are the most important works of literature. We get trained to think of men as true literary artists, and female writers wind up being overshadowed. But the real problem is that, beyond the classroom, it seems like many male readers continue to exclusively read male authors — and that they’ve internalized the idea that men’s ideas are more valid than women’s, particularly when it comes to literature.

Case in point: In 2015, when Esquire published a list of “80 Books Every Man Should Read,” only one of the books on that list was penned by a woman. The mag ultimately went back and updated the piece after major backlash. But it’s a huge problem when a major men’s magazine simply forgets that women belong on its list of writerly icons, because the message that it sends to male readers is that female authors are somehow subpar — that women’s ideas belong in the realm of afterthought, rather than first instinct.

None of this is to say that there aren’t men out there who do read female writers. Of course there are. I have guy friends who devoured The Flamethrowers, who quote The Argonauts to me in text messages. The first night I met my ex, we bonded over a moment in a recent Meghan Daum essay. These men exist. I’ve seen them, out in the wild.

But Bushwick homeboy wasn’t one of them. As it neared closing time at the loud bar, my date stopped talking about Cormac McCarthy and started sending me some not-so-subtle vibes to invite him back to my apartment. I declined and told him I wanted to head home alone. Here is what I did not say, but was definitely thinking: I know I would be much happier falling asleep next to a dog-eared Maggie Nelson book than a guy who thought quizzing me on my memory of No Country for Old Men was good foreplay.

I Tried Kim Kardashian's Makeup Routine — & Here’s What Happened

$

I'm a total beauty novice when compared to most of my coworkers. In fact, my makeup routine hasn’t changed much since high school — tinted moisturizer, a little bronzer, some smudgy gray eyeliner, and drugstore mascara is all I wear on the regular. In most cases, I'm still using the exact same formulas, too.

What's more, when I landed my job at Refinery29 as an associate social media editor, working alongside our beauty team, I barely knew what contouring was and could have confused a Beautyblender for a marshmallow Peep. Of course, that changed quickly, but my makeup bag still hadn't.

Volunteering to try Kim Kardashian's makeup routine for a story? I thought of it as a personal challenge to understand what an in-depth morning-primping regime would be like. Plus, I'd likely discover some great new products. After all, if you’re looking to understand any subject, what better way to do so than to learn from the ultimate pro? Kim K. would be my makeup Socrates, and I, her impressionable Plato.

The Challenge

For five days straight, I used this story as a guide to navigating the contour queen's routine. Spoiler: It took upwards of 35 products per day to pull off — about 31 more than I normally opt for. Even with a few small substitutions (some of the products aren't available), this is, by far, the most I'll ever have in common with Kim K. — so let's jump right into how it went down.

Kim K. would be my makeup Socrates, and I, her impressionable Plato.

Day 1

Doing my makeup on the first day took me almost an hour. Since I didn't have an exact step-by-step tutorial — just the products and a brief description of how they're used — most of what I did was more of an educated guess than an exact science.

Let’s just say the learning curve was steep. I later realized I was using undereye concealer as a cream highlighter and brow powder as eyeshadow. My poor brushes were a hodgepodge of different colors from mixing and matching where I probably shouldn’t have. It became clear to me that I would need some extra guidance if I was going to get through this week without looking like a glittery Oompa Loompa.

Day 2

The next day I asked our beauty writer, Mi-Anne Chan, to walk me through the process in our office bathroom. She showed me how to dampen my Beautyblender, what areas to contour with bronzer, where to apply my highlighter, and more. But extra guidance didn't make me feel any more comfortable with all the extra makeup I was wearing — even if it was starting to look better. I realized this would take some adjusting in my mind, too.

Day 3

By day three, I was feeling a bit more confident in what I was doing and the whole routine started to feel therapeutic. I would liken it to cooking — a calmness that results from being creative but also following a planned-out recipe. On this day, I figured out a setup that made the organization of the products a lot more enjoyable to work with, too. Sitting on the floor in front of my full-length mirror, surrounded by empty yogurt jars full of water to dampen my many brushes, I contentedly worked away — who’s to say I wasn’t an artist in the making?

Day 4

So, I got a little cocky. Instead of waking up an hour early to do my makeup, as I had on previous mornings, I convinced myself that 30 minutes would be sufficient. I was late for work and embarrassed that I had to text my team explaining why. Luckily, they took it well.

That evening, I rushed straight from the office to a hot-yoga class, forgetting I was, essentially, wearing an entire Sephora aisle on my face. Have you ever wondered what happens when you spend an hour in a 105-degree room wearing four different types of eyeliner and three eyeshadow shades? It’s not pretty, let me tell you. Which begs the question: What makeup does Kim Kardashian wear to work out? Perhaps that routine would best work as my everyday one? Note to self: Find out and try it.

Day 5

On my final day doing the routine, I asked myself why I still felt like such a farce. I looked at myself in the mirror before leaving for work: All week I had put thought into my outfits, but for this particular summer Friday I was wearing mom jeans, a flannel shirt, and my Chuck Taylors, with my hair pulled back in a messy bun. Yet my eyelids were glittery, cheeks sculpted, and lips lined.

I realized this: Makeup is all about context. Part of its transformative power is you being able to be who you want to be at the moment you want. When you rock red lips or a daring cat-eye, it’s because you’re expressing that part of your personality. Needless to say, on the days I wasn’t feeling, or dressing, for the Kim K. part, I looked, and felt, pretty silly.

Final Thoughts

Did this experience make me rethink my entire makeup routine? Not really, but for the first time I am truly obsessed with defining my brows — and I am starting to play with a little light contouring. However, I learned something even better.

Kim K.'s entire career is based on a persona that is constantly scrutinized in the public eye. Her life is luxe, but she doesn’t necessarily have the luxury of being able to present herself in a way that reflects how she’s feeling at all times. Never in my life did I think I’d be saying that she lacks a luxury I’m able to enjoy, but it's true. If I don't want to wear makeup, I don't really have to, and if I want to wake up early to zone out creating a beautifully sculpted look? That's cool, too.

The following Saturday night, I cooked dinner at home with some friends, and we made the last-minute decision to end the night at a party. In five minutes flat, I threw on a pair of shorts and my Chucks and was out the door — but I didn't touch my face. And you know what? It felt very luxurious.

All Charges Dropped Against Officers Involved In Freddie Gray Death Trial

Update: All charges have been dropped against the three remaining officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray, The Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The prosecutors’ decision to drop the charges marks the end of the case, which saw six officers charged over the death. Gray, a Black man, died in April of 2015 after being arrested in Baltimore, MD. His fatal injury while in police custody sparked protests and demonstrations around the city and helped heighten the profile of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Three out of the four officers who had already been tried were acquitted on all counts, with the final case ending in a mistrial. The fifth trial in the case, that of officer Garrett Miller, had been scheduled to begin today.

Update: July 18, 2016: The most senior police officer charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray has been found not guilty of all charges, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Lt. Brian Rice had been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in office. It was alleged by prosecutors that Rice had caused Gray's death last year by failing to fasten him in a seat belt in the back of the police van, where he suffered severe spinal cord injuries.

Rice was one of the six officers charged in connection with the death of the 25-year-old, who died a week after his arrest.

Two other trials that were heard by U.S. Circuit Judge Barry Williams ended in acquittals, according to The Sun. A third was found to be a mistrial after a hung jury, and the remaining two officers facing charges will stand trial later this year.

Update: June 23, 2016: Police Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr. has been found not guilty in all charges in the April 2015 death of Freddie Gray, The Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Officer Goodson, the driver of the van where Gray received his fatal injury, was acquitted of manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office, reckless endangerment, and “depraved-heart” murder. Goodson was the only one of the six officers involved in Gray’s death to be charged with murder.

Goodson is the third of the six officers charged in the case to be tried. Previously, Officer Edward Nero was also acquitted of all charges, while Officer William Porter’s case ended in a mistrial. Porter, as well as the remaining three officers, have trials scheduled for summer and fall of this year.

Update: May 23, 2016: A Baltimore officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray has been found not guilty on all counts, The Associated Press reports.

Officer Edward Nero is one of six officers charged in the April 2015 death of Gray, who died after he was injured while riding in the back of a police van. The charges against Nero were reckless endangerment, misconduct, and assault. A judge delivered the not guilty verdict Monday morning.

An earlier trial for another officer charged in Gray's death ended in a hung jury.

The following story was published on December 16, 2015.

The Associated Press reports that the trial of an officer charged with manslaughter in the death of Freddie Gray has ended with a hung jury.

Circuit Judge Barry Williams said today that jurors in the trial had announced a deadlock. The Baltimore police officer, William Porter, is the first of six officers to stand trial for the death of Gray, which occurred while Gray was in police custody. Officer Porter was charged with manslaughter for neglecting to buckle Gray into the police van after his arrest, and neglecting to call an ambulance after Gray was injured. An autopsy found that Gray died as a result of a spinal injury, likely incurred after slamming into the inside of the van when it turned a corner or stopped. Gray’s April 2015 death while in police custody prompted weeks of protests in Baltimore. Protesters accused the police of excessive force, and demonstrations associated with the Black Lives Matter movement helped spur the case into greater prominence.

The jurors deliberated for three days before telling the judge they were unable to reach a decision. The AP reports that Judge Williams told the jurors they had “clearly been diligent” in their deliberations. There is as of yet no news on a retrial.

Alicia Keys Goes Without Makeup At The DNC

Update: Alicia Keys performed at the Democratic National Convention last night, and she did it without a stitch of makeup on. Naturally, she looked as beautiful as ever, and we're happy to see she's sticking to her no-makeup vow.

This story was originally published on June 27, 2016, at 12:20 p.m.

Photo: Stewart Cook/Variety/REX/Shutterstock.

Last month, singer Alicia Keys penned an intimate essay about the societal pressures women face to be perfect and her desire to start a no-makeup movement. Unsurprisingly, her thoughtful words prompted all of the applause. But here's the incredibly cool part: They weren't just words. Last night, she hit the BET Awards without a lick of mascara or lipstick in sight.

With a radiant au naturel visage, the 35-year-old happily posed for pics with her hubby Swizz Beatz. The star's beat-free face was complemented by a black jumpsuit, silver headscarf, and glitzy accessories. For an event that usually calls for a makeup master class, Keys' minimal beauty was a welcome, if not downright exhilarating, sight.

In her May Lenny Letter piece, Keys wrote: "Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture? What if they POSTED it? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me." The photos of Keys last night are all over the internet — and we're guessing she couldn't be happier with her choice.

About two summers ago, we saw an uptick of celebrities showing off bare faces on social media. The movement was as refreshing as it was fleeting. It's exciting and commendable that Keys remains dedicated to her stance then, now, and even at an awards show. To borrow a quote from the singer herself, we hope to God it's a revolution.

Ed Sheeran Prompts Marriage Speculation With Ring Pic

In 2016, surprise wedding and engagement ring photos are no longer the domain of female celebrities. The latest famous person to pop up on social media with some possibly symbolic hardware on his left ring finger is Ed Sheeran.

My baby girls 5th birthday party was lit! Even both godparents were in attendance finally lol

A photo posted by Jovel (@jovelmusic) on

Immediately after Sheeran's friend Jovel posted this photo, eagle-eyed fans noticed that ring. Does it mean he's actually married? Did he just put that ring on that finger because it's where it fit right? It's hard to imagine that the singer of the number-one wedding first-dance song on Spotify ("Thinking Out Loud") doesn't think long and hard about these things.

Sheeran has been dating Cherry Seaborn for a little more than a year. According to the Mirror, the two went to high school together. Bustle reports that she's currently an advisory consultant at Deloitte & Touche in New York City. Sheeran's been enjoying some time off this past year, after a whole lot of touring, and he's been spotted all over the world with Seaborn.

Most recently, the pair could be seen celebrating their anniversary in the background of a Taylor Swift Instagram post.

"Love actually is all around." Congratulations guys ❤️ @abigail_lauren @teddysphotos

While Sheeran himself is on a self-imposed social media break, it seems his friends can't help but share pics of him looking happy, relaxed, and in love.

Kylie Jenner's Newest Makeup Launch Sold Out As Fast As Her Lip Kits

Update: To absolutely no one's surprise, the first ever Kyshadow palette sold out in less than 60 seconds. The newest launch went live at 3 p.m. PST on Tuesday, July 26, and was out of stock before you could name every Kardashian and Jenner. Don't feel too defeated if you couldn't get it into your shopping basket in time: The palette will be back on Kylie's website this Friday. Timing has yet to be announced, though, so keep an eye out.

This story was originally published on July 25, 2016, at 4 p.m.

The day we've been anxiously awaiting has arrived. No, Hamilton tickets didn't drop to $50 a pop — this breaking news concerns (who else) Kylie Jenner. More specifically, her line of cosmetics, which will include, as of tomorrow, a product other than the Lip Kit: Get ready for the Kyshadow Kit, folks!

#KYSHADOW Bronze Palette @kyliecosmetics

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Kylie fanatics have been buzzing ever since she dropped news that she was opening up a Kylie Cosmetics store — how would she possibly fill an entire brick-and-mortar location with just Lip Kits?! The rumor that more products must be in development was given legs this past weekend, when Kylie posted an Instagram of her eye that resembled a sketch. The question then became: Would she be launching mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, or brow enhancers? Now, we know — it's called The Bronze Palette, and it includes nine neutral eyeshadow shades in both matte and shimmery finishes, with tutorials for how to use them available on her website and app.

In the new video she posted, Kylie says, "I've been dreaming of this moment for way too long. This eye palette is literally my baby." (We don't think it literally is, but that's neither here nor there...) Then, makeup artist Ariel Tejada shows off how to get the glam look in an eight-minute demonstration using every shade featured in the kit. And because it wouldn't be a Kylie video without a tease, the youngest Jenner tells us, "It was so important for me to release this one first. "

We've heard speculation that the next product launch will be Kyliner or Kybrow — and considering brow-tinting might soon be no more, the latter seems like a wise move.

The palette drops on her Kylie Cosmetics website tomorrow at 3 p.m. PST, and we're betting it'll be an even bigger hit than the Lip Kits — so set an alarm.

Pooping: We all do it. We all joke about it (or, at least those of us who still have the humor of 10-year-olds). But are we doing it right? What if we made pooping more than just a bodily function and elevated it to a time to relax, rejuvenate, and reset? Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag Confess How They Lost So Much Money

$

0

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are without a doubt one of the most iconic reality star pairings of our young millennial lives. They earned six-figure paychecks each from stirring up enough drama on The Hills to last a decade. After the show wrapped, they then began hustling hard to keep their names in the headlines by selling photographs to paparazzi, being paid to attend events, and starring in more cheesy reality shows.

But then, the couple famously lost all their money. In 2013, the couple told InTouch and HLN that they were broke after spending about $10 million. It appears that they are still struggling to regain financial stability.

Recently, People talked to Speidi at their home where the couple explained just how they went from millionaires to living rent-free in Pratt's parents Santa Barbara vacation home. In the end, it was a classic case of "keeping up with the Joneses."

Caught up in the demanding lifestyle of L.A., the couple told the site that after they married in 2009, they started to spend luxuriously. For example, they say they spent roughly $1 million just on Montag's wardrobe, and another $1 million just on Pratt's crystal collection. They also ate expensive meals, washing it down with $3,000 bottles of wine, all the while surrounded by a "full staff." People estimates that bodyguards can cost up to $15,000 — just for one night of work.

Pratt said their need to overspend came from the pressure they put on themselves to keep up with other celebrity couples, like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. He admits, in hindsight, they "should have just stayed in their reality lane," referring to their social status as reality stars, and not movie stars.

The hardest part for Montag was realizing how much of their fortune they had lost (which ended up being nearly all of it.) "I was feeling so alone and defeated," Montag said. "Everyone else on our cast had houses and we had nothing to show for what we'd done. I was like, the haters were right! It was sad."

Now, their income mostly comes from reality show appearances. Montag says doing a show like Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars often becomes an audition for the next reality program. The two are happy with less now, although living on the beach for free doesn't sound too laborious, and said they are focusing on "being happy with family and marriage and with personal progress," in the words of Montag.

Please Stop Asking Me About The Ring On My Left Hand

$

Photo: John Salangsang/BFA.

In my family, jewelry was always the go-to gift. This is partially cultural: I'm half-Puerto Rican, which means gold bracelets, chains, and other accessories are standard presents for special occasions. When I was two, my finger got so chubby that my mom had to take me to the jeweler to cut off the ring my grandmother had given me as a baby. (And for the record: We were all rocking gold nameplates long before Carrie Bradshaw made them cool.)

This love for bling followed me into adulthood. I've worn a variety of combinations over the years, but no matter what, I always wear at least two rings: On my right hand, the pearl number my mom passed down to me from her 16th birthday; on my left ring finger, a pink gem stone my dad bought for me during an island vacation when I was 16.

Yes, you read that correctly: I wear that on my left ring finger, where an engagement ring is "supposed" to go. Why that particular finger, you ask? Honestly, there's no real reason — I just love the ring, and that's where it fits best. I've worn it daily for over 12 years, and my hand feels naked when I forget it. In fact, on the rare occasions I'm not wearing the ring, I still find myself automatically reaching down to play with it.

The ring was never intended to signal my relationship status. And yet, that's almost always what people assume. At a club recently, I started chatting with a cute guy. The conversation was flowing, I was in full-on flirt mode, and he asked if I wanted a drink. But when we got to the bar, he stopped in his tracks. "Oh man, you're engaged?" he asked. I gave him a confused look, until I saw him staring at my hand. "Oh, no, that's just where I happen to wear my favorite ring," I explained, laughing. "I always wear it on this hand." His response surprised me. "You really shouldn't," he said. "It will stop guys from approaching you."

His "advice" felt like something from the early 1900s. But then I realized, I shouldn't be that surprised — this was actually a somewhat familiar conversation. When I was in a long-term relationship, acquaintances or coworkers who had never noticed the ring before would see it and squeal, assuming my then-boyfriend had proposed. An Instagram where my ring was visible once led a high school classmate to comment, "Oh my God, is that what I think it is?!" And now that I'm single, when I've met new people, I've been asked if I'm engaged, married, or simply "what the deal is" with my ring. Most of the time, I just want to respond: Honestly? It's none of your business.

But I'm not alone. A photo of Kylie Jenner from two weeks ago sparked rumors that she was engaged to her boyfriend, Tyga:

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

In May, the media was quick to attribute Rihanna's diamond ring at the Billboard Awards to rumored beau, Drake:

Of course, in our social media-obsessed, pop-culture-driven world, the celebrity speculation is understandable. But in 2016, assuming a woman is wearing a piece of jewelry to signify her relationship status does seem a bit ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous, though, is that most of us don't even know why we still follow the antiquated custom that your left ring finger should even stay naked until you're "betrothed."

According to The New York Times, 75% of American brides wear engagement rings. Yet there's no singular, clear reason we still follow this tradition. Historians have many theories: Some say the exchanging of rings dates back to ancient Egypt; others believe engagement rings come from a time when virginal women were regarded as property that needed to be purchased away from their family; and then there are those who think it's all just the result of a marketing campaign to increase diamond sales.

I'm sure some of you may be thinking, If you don't want any confusion about your relationship status, why even wear a ring on that finger at all? You have nine other options! When I started wearing the ring on that finger when I was 16, it never raised eyebrows. Now that I'm "of marrying age," however, my favorite accessory has prompted so many questions that it's somehow transformed into a small feminist statement. Sure, if I ever get married one day, I'll likely wear an engagement ring, and later a wedding band, on that finger. But whether I'm single, taken, or somewhere in between, how I accessorize and express myself is up to me.

So if you ever see a woman with a piece on her ring finger, consider that it might not be appropriate to ask when the wedding is. Perhaps the better question is why she loves the ring.

Ariana Grande is one of the biggest Harry Potter fans in Hollywood. The pop star has long been outspoken about her love of anything to do with the beloved franchise. She snapchatted her trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter back in January. She once tweeted about owning Draco Malfoy pillowcases when she was 9 years old. For her 23rd birthday last month, Grande's friends composed a Harry Potter -themed rap and shot an accompanying music video. And she recently started reading the whole series all over again.

But Grande's latest show of dedication to the wizarding world has reached a whole new level. The singer took to Instagram to share her brand-new custom Harry Potter jacket. The back of the intricate topper is embroidered with Dumbledore's face and reads, "Dumbledore's Army." Grande captioned the video, "muggle in the streets wizard in da sheets." She also thanked the maker of her ridiculously amazing custom jacket.

The embroidery artist behind the superfan creation shared a couple of close-ups of the handiwork. Pretty spellbinding if you ask us!
